The Scottish Daily Record Award for Education Supporter of the Year

Kent Pledger from Mid Calder Primary School with his Education Supporter of the Year Award

Kent Pledger – Mid Calder Primary School

Kent Pledger is an American who is living in Scotland and working at Mid Calder Primary School as an ICT technician. He has worked there for three years with an additional responsibility for Enterprise Education. During that time he has made an enormous difference to the teaching and learning in the school.

During the refurbishment two years ago a new feature fitted in classrooms was Smartboards. At first teaching staff were very apprehensive about using them and Mr Pledger encouraged and supported them until their confidence levels soared. He utilised Enterprise funds to ensure all classes had a digital camera to evidence their work and to develop the use of digital imagery through power points, digital movies and slide shows.

These shows are screened through the plasma screen he installed in the foyer to showcase the work of the school to parents and visitors. He has now been inspired to develop Engineering in the school by setting up a Young Engineers’ Club which he runs with a class teacher. Mid-Calder Primary School would be a poorer place without his insight and innovative approaches to making education challenging, yet enormous fun.
